Case Studies

We have a reputation for inventive, innovative and practical design and production techniques.

Lister-Petter Ltd diesel engines incorporate various Doig compression, extension and torsion springs - also pressings and complex wire forms.

An Arianespace Launch. The nose cone incorporates a series of extremely high-precision compression springs designed to eject the nose cone straight and true prior to satellite deployment.
Some examples of unusual applications for which we have designed solutions are illustrated here:

An MEM Ltd circuit breaker incorporating a high precision copper coil. The rectangular section enamelled copper wire has the enamel automatically removed at the ends as part of the production process.
John Crane International Ltd - mechanical seals incorporating compression springs in a wide range of corrosion resistant materials including Monel and Hastalloy.
A Black & Decker "Professional" power drill incorporating various Doig compression and torsion springs and also pressings and complex wire forms.

British Aerospace Tornado fighters incorporate various Doig Springs including compression, extension and torsion springs as well as complex wire forms up to 1.25 metres long, each containing up to 90 bends.

Flight Refuelling Group plc - in-flight refuelling equipment being used to charge the tanks of several aircraft simultaneously. Various Doig compression, extension and torsion springs are used and pressings and complex wire forma re also incorporated.

A Stoves Ltd domestic cooker incorporating a variety of Doig extension and torsion springs and pressings.

A GPT Payphone incorporating a feather-light torsion spring.

A Mountfield lawn mower incorporating a heavy-duty zinc plated pressing on the height adjustment lever.
These are just a few examples of applications of Doig's practical and innovating designing and production capabilities.

In 1993 the largest manufacture of domestic cookers approached us to manufacture a spring currently being produced by one of our competitors. By carefully analysing the function of the spring we managed to redesign the part and thereby reduce the cost from £1.00 to £0.15 each. The present price of the component is £0.10 each.

Many of Doig's customers are household names and our springs, pressings and
wireforms are used in a wide variety of industries including:
